EFT is an acronym for The Emotional Freedom Technique. It is also often called “tapping” or “tapping therapy.”
EFT is acupuncture without using any needles.
EFT is a healing practice that is based on techniques that have been used in various forms around the world for more than 5,000 years. It uses the same meridians (energy points) of the body as acupuncture and acupressure, only in this version, the areas are tapped with fingertips instead of using needles or applied pressure.
EFT brings together traditional art forms and measurable medical science.
The benefits of those techniques have been enjoyed by patients throughout all of that time, but modern science has allowed us to actually measure the difference that is made within the brain, through fMRI scans. For more about the science behind EFT, please read my article called “EFT Therapy – Quackery or Cure-All?”.
My personal experience with the Emotional Freedom Technique
My first encounter with the Emotional Freedom Technique was as a graduate student. At the time, I was learning about Thought Field Therapy, which was developed by Roger Callahan. That technique was later refined by Gary Craig, who called his version EFT.
My own personal journey and trauma was what lead me to my discovery of the true benefits of EFT. I became a widow at the age of twenty-seven, while I was pregnant with my first child. Having been familiar with meditation and having a knowledge of the meridians in the body, I found that tapping various places on my body produced a calming response in my mind, body and spirit.
Practicing EFT
Practicing EFT can be very helpful in coping with or even overcoming anxiety, panic disorder, trauma, and even phobias.
Although I highly recommend learning and practicing EFT on your own, there is also a broad spectrum of additional benefits that can be experienced while working with an EFT Practitioner. This is especially true when you are hoping to use the technique to manage a mental or emotional disorder, as it gives you the chance to safely explore the events and deeply rooted beliefs that have caused these conditions to develop.
A Practitioner can be especially helpful in the formulation of effective EFT Taping scripts that can be challenging for an individual to create in terms of the words to use and the statements that need to be made in order to resolve your struggle.
